Starting® Up® Your Device® Safely & Securely
You’ve made the right decision choosing Trezor to safeguard your cryptocurrency holdings. This guide helps you navigate through the **setup process** — from unboxing to making your first secure transaction. Let this page be your roadmap.
The strength of Trezor lies in its hardware isolation: your private keys never touch your computer or the internet. Each action must be verified physically on the device itself. That’s how you stay safe from malware, phishing, and remote attacks.
Before beginning the setup, please ensure you have:
⚠️ Important: Never enter your recovery seed phrase into any website, app, or digital document. Keep it offline and in a secure location.
Open your browser and go to https://trezor.io/start. Confirm the URL is correct and secure (the padlock icon appears). Only use this official path to initiate your setup — do not use cloned pages.
On that page, you will see options to download Trezor Suite or to continue via web (if your browser supports it). Select the method that fits your setup environment.
Choose the Trezor Suite version for your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux) from the Start page. Download and install it. Trezor Suite is the management application that helps you control accounts, send/receive assets, and update firmware.
After installation, open Trezor Suite. It will detect when a device is connected and guide you through its setup.
Use the USB cable to plug your Trezor device into your computer. Trezor Suite should detect the device automatically. If it doesn’t, try a different USB port or cable — avoid USB hubs. Clean contacts help if connections are dusty.
The device may prompt an authenticity check — always confirm the prompt on the device screen. This ensures the unit is genuine and untampered.
Many devices arrive with no firmware for security reasons. Trezor Suite will prompt you to install the latest firmware version. If firmware is already present but outdated, it will prompt an update. Confirm both on Suite and the device.
Do not disconnect during firmware installation. After completion, the device will reboot and perform an integrity check to confirm authenticity.
At this stage, you will choose between:
When creating new, your device will show your seed words one at a time — write them down in order on the provided card. After writing, you’ll confirm some words on the device to ensure accuracy.
💡 Tip: Store duplicates of your seed phrase (in secure, separate locations), but never store them together or in digital form.
You will now choose a PIN code. This PIN is required every time the device is connected to prevent unauthorized access. Importantly, you enter the PIN **on the Trezor device**, not your computer — this safeguards it from malware.
Make the PIN memorable for you but hard for someone else to guess (not “1234”, birthdays, etc.). Under no circumstances should you write your PIN next to your recovery seed.
After initializing, Trezor Suite lets you enable coin accounts (e.g. Bitcoin, Ethereum) that you plan to use. Only enable those you need to keep your interface uncluttered.
